Florida Governor Signs Massive Gun Confiscation Bill into Law

Florida Gov. Rick Scott officially broke with the National Rifle Association (NRA) on Friday when he signed new gun regulations into law.

Fox News reported that Scott, a Republican who had been praised by the NRA in the past, said he signed the legislation because it’s a “time for all of us to come together, roll up our sleeves and get it done.” This came three weeks after the mass shooting in Parkland that left 17 people dead, a tragedy that liberals have been shamelessly using to call for gun control from the very beginning.

The new law Scott signed raises the minimum purchasing age for buying a rifle from 18 to 21, invokes a three-day waiting period on purchases and enables school employees and many teachers to be armed. However, the legislation also allows law enforcement to temporarily seize guns from the mentally ill and fund measures like bulletproof glass and metal detectors at schools.

The NRA had urged Scott to veto the bill.

“YOU and every other law-abiding gun owner is being blamed for an atrocious act of premeditated murder,” the NRA wrote in a statement earlier this week. “Neither the three-day waiting period on all rifles and shotguns, raising the age from 18 to 21 to buy any firearm, or the bump stock ban will have any effect on crime.”

Scott began distancing himself from the NRA immediately after the Parkland shooting, even creating a $500 million proposal to place an armed officer in every school. The NRA vocally opposes raising the age limit as well as imposing new waiting periods. NRA and Unified Sportsmen of Florida lobbyist Marion Hammer called the new bill “a display of bullying and coercion” that would punishes law-abiding citizens and infringe on Second Amendment rights.
