Former first lady Laura Bush said Wednesday she wishes President Trump and his family the best, and has been back to Washington to have tea with Melania Trump. She applauded Melania on Wednesday for her work in the role since President Trump’s inauguration.
“I just think she’s doing a lovely job,” said Bush, adding, “She’s a beautiful woman. She’s a wonderful representative for the United States.”
Laura, who is former President George W. Bush’s wife revealed earlier that she has also talked to Melania in the past few months, having even visited the White house for tea, during which she got the opportunity to catch up in the Diplomatic reception Room, with some of the permanent employees who helped her during her husband’s two terms.
She then proceeded to say that she wishes the current first couple “the very, very best.”
“I know what it’s like to live there,” Bush explained, adding, “I know how difficult every decision is and what the scrutiny is by everyone that has an opinion, every single person has an opinion on the people that live there, and I’m certainly aware of that.”
And while Bush’s interview was mainly centered around promoting her advocacy work for the U.S.-Afghan Women’s Council, she also took the chance to address the accusations of sexual assault, which were just earlier thrown at her father-in-law, former President George H.W. Bush.
She brushed off the claims, explaining she was sad that it had come to that, adding, “That was something that was very, very innocent that he’s been accused of. But I know he would feel terrible. He would never in any way hurt anybody.”

Former President George W. Bush, Laura’s husband, made headlines a couple of weeks ago when he gave a speech condemning bigotry and isolationist policies in what many saw as a rebuke of Trump, though he did not specifically name him. Both Bushes left their presidential ballots blank when they voted last year.
